Day 4: Stage wins and Power Stage consolation

At the end of a gruelling Monte-Carlo rally, we were finally able to enjoy some competitive and relatively trouble-free stages. We added two more stage wins, bringing our weekend total to six, and our remaining crews picked up important Power Stage points.

Few people would have believed Thierry on Friday when he suggested that a top-five finish might be possible. Our Belgian crew had lost four minutes of time on Thursday evening to languish down the order in 17th place. A determined attitude and some feisty performances on Sunday morning saw them achieve their target against all odds.

“The places we have made up today – right to the end of the Power Stage – show how important it is to push to the finish,” he said. “Without the puncture and tricky snow conditions yesterday, a podium would still have been possible. That’s Monte-Carlo!”

Stage stars

In total, Thierry and Nicolas totalled five stage wins, with Andreas and Anders making it six in total for our team.

The highlight of Sunday morning was the iconic run up to Col de Turini, with its icy summit offering an exciting spectacle for fans. However, our Norwegians were concentrated on glory in the final test – the Power Stage. Starting first on the road, they ultimately had to settle for third – but were happy with their day.

“With no tyre zone or service, we adopted a compromised strategy taking five soft tyres,” commented Andreas. “I was happy with my run. It’s my best drive feeling-wise so far with the car on dry tarmac, which is encouraging.”

Down but not out

Our Team Principal Michel concluded: “Monte has never been a particularly kind rally to us, and again we leave here with little to show for our efforts. We had some improved stage results today, and a strong Power Stage run from Thierry and Andreas, but we can only really look back on this weekend as a rally of disappointment. We have to put this one behind us and start our 2018 season properly in Sweden.”

The second round of the 2018 WRC takes place in Sweden from 15-18 February, where we will field a three-car line-up with Hayden joining Thierry and Andreas.

Twelve months since a cruel retirement from the rally lead, our Belgian crew Thierry and Nicolas have finally conquered Rally Sweden. A competitive weekend for the pair saw triumph by 19.8 seconds over Citroën’s Craig Breen with our Norwegians Andreas and Anders also on the podium!

It was a suspenseful Sunday on the snowy Swedish stages with plenty up for grabs. Thankfully Thierry and Nicolas mastered the conditions to secure our first victory of the 2018 season in style.

“An incredible result,” said a smiling Thierry on the podium. “I felt we deserved the win last year, but perhaps even more so this weekend. We have many people working tirelessly every day behind the scenes to give us a competitive car, one with which we can fight for victories. This win is for all of them; it’s been a fantastic weekend.”

The winner takes it all/strong>

Taking 25 points for the win and an additional two points in the Power Stage, Thierry is now leading the drivers’ championship after two rounds. As a team, we have also jumped up to the top of the manufacturers’ table in a closely fought contest with Toyota, Citroën and M-Sport.

Andreas and Anders finished third in the Torsby Power Stage to add three extra points to their own podium points. “It is a fantastic feeling to be standing on the podium for the first time with Hyundai Motorsport,” said Andreas. “It’s wonderful to see the team at the top of the championship, even at this early stage in the season.”

It was a less auspicious end to the rally for our Kiwi Hayden and his co-driver Seb. Trying to defend fourth place, the crew had a small excursion into a snow bank on the final stage, losing valuable time.

“An annoying end to what had been a generally positive weekend for us,” said Hayden. “It was just a small mistake. We have plenty of positives to take away and I am looking forward to continuing this trend in my next WRC event in Portugal.”

The name of the game

The result marks our first victory in Sweden and the eighth WRC win in our team’s history. After a disappointing start to the season in Monte-Carlo, we have bounced back well.

“This has been a fantastic rally for our team,” commented Michel. “We have performed strongly. I have said many times that the competition in WRC is the toughest and closest it has been for years, so we can’t take this result for granted.

Round three of the 2018 WRC season takes place in Mexico from 8-11 March. It will be the first gravel round of the championship where we have twice finished on the podium previously.

“Mexico will offer a completely different set of challenges,” added Michel. “For now, though, we’ll celebrate this victory, double podium and positive all-round team result.”

2017 was our most competitive year in the WRC, but we are ready to raise the bar even higher for the 2018 season! Our championship ambitions are still unfulfilled but we hope our fifth season in world rallying will deliver the goods.

“We are in high spirits,” explains our Team Principal Michel Nandan. “We came close in 2017 but we fell short in terms of performance and consistency. We want to rectify that.”

Four crews will compete under the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team banner this season: Andreas and Anders, Thierry and Nicolas, Hayden and Seb, Dani and Carlos. Each will contribute to our championship objectives over the 13-event calendar.

“Taking four wins in 2017, and being competitive in many other events, gives us real motivation to go one better,” reveals last year’s championship runner-up Thierry. “As a team, we keep getting stronger with each season. I feel it’s our time to shine.”

Andreas, who only joined us for the final three rounds of the 2017 campaign, begins a full season in Hyundai Motorsport colours: “This is the moment I have been waiting for!” he says. “Those three rallies were really useful for Anders and me. I am now ready to attack with confidence.”

With our Norwegian crew in the #4 car and our Belgians back in their preferred #5, our third car will be shared between two crews. Dani and his new co-driver Carlos will take the #6 car in Monte-Carlo, handing over to Hayden and Seb for Sweden.

“The progress the team has made since 2014 has been incredible,” says Dani. “I feel very loyal to my Hyundai Motorsport family and I am 100% committed to giving everything I have in the rallies I join.”

Hayden adds: “I am treating 2018 almost like a fresh start after our difficulties from last year. I want to put that behind me and use the positives from our podium results to spur us on to achieve what I know we are capable of.”

As we prepare to join the season launch alongside our rivals and colleagues from the WRC community at Autosport International, the final word goes to Michel.

“We are very respectful of our rivals,” he says. “Their performances only serve to make us try to improve ourselves from one event to the next. This is what drives us forward as we work towards our ultimate championship goals.”

All WRC cars are built upon roadcars.
Only models manufactured for the general public with over 25,000 units produced
per year are eligible to compete in the WRC, and modifications with special materials
like titanium, magnesium, and ceramics are prohibited.

Hyundai i20 WRC

The i20 WRC puts a suspension optimized for the WRC in a new chassis with enhanced
torsional rigidity. The body features newly designed aeroparts to improve driving stability,
a turbocharged 1,600cc engine with 380 horsepower, a 6-speed sequential racing transmission,
and a competent four-wheel drive system. The i20 WRC is the culmination

  • In 2016, the Hyundai Motorsport Team finished second in the manufacturer category with 12 podium finishes, including 2 in first place. This was a huge development compared to just 1 first place finish and 4 podiums in 2015.

    The Hyundai Motorsport Team, which unveiled the i20 WRC race car based on the new i20 in 2016, will take another leap forward towards winning the competition with a new race car based on the new i20 coupe in 2017.

    Hayden Paddon brought the Hyundai Motorsport Team its first victory during the 2016 season. It was a meaningful race not only because it was the team's first victory of the season, but also because it was Hayden Paddon's first individual WRC win. He showed a strong performance on dirt roads and left the Rally Argentina without any regrets, leaving him only to look eagerly towards achieving even better.

    Thierry Neuville, who was in a slump during the early stages of the season, turned it around to win the Rally Italy in the mid-season, and took to the podium 5 times after that. In the end, he was able to take 2nd place in the individual standings overall.

    Responding to the overwhelming support from his home fans in Spain, Dani Sordo led for most of the race in 1st place, but after losing the lead in stage 14, he had to settle for a result of 2nd. Nevertheless, Thierry Neuville brought the silver lining by rallying into 3rd, giving the team a double podium in this exciting race.

    Hyundai Motorsport established itself as a genuine contender after securing a historic 1-2 finish and two other podium finishes in its debut season. The team demonstrated further improvement over the season's 13 rallies, ending up with enough points to secure 3rd place overall.

    With continuous development from lessons learned from driving on the harshest roads, the next generation i20 Rally Car is gearing up for the 2016 season.

  • Hyundai Motorsport's maiden season in 2014 was full of highlights, memories and firsts. With its continuously improving i20 WRC, the team boldly carried on during an extremely competitive and fierce WRC season. Hyundai achieved its first victory in Rally Germany after 9 attempts and took four podiums in three rallies overall.

  • Hyundai began its debut season in January 2014 in Monte-Carlo, with the shortest preparation time for any new manufacturer ever. It was just 394 days after the formation of Hyundai Motorsport GmbH, made possible by 8,000km of i20 WRC testing over 16 sessions.

    Review of Hyundai Motorsport Team's first season

    On August 24, 2014, four drivers from the Hyundai Motorsport Team stood on the podium in Trier, Germany. The team scored a historic maiden victory in the FIA World Rally Championship, with Thierry Neuville leading teammate Dani Sordo home to a 1-2 finish in the team's ninth WRC event. Considering that the team had only been in existence for 18 months, the result is even more impressive.
    This rally in Germany was straight out of a fairy tale: things looked hopeless after a major crash right before the rally, but the mechanics worked a remarkable 18-hour shift to fix the car just in time for the first day, after which the team miraculously went on to win their debut WRC event that very Sunday afternoon. The four days in Trier showed just how much the team had improved, leaving the world in anticipation of their journey onward.

    • With its maiden victory in Rally Deutschland in August, Hyundai became just one of two manufacturers to win a WRC event in 2014, the other being Volkswagen.
    • In its debut season, Hyundai has taken to the podium in three rallies (Mexico, Poland and Germany) with four podium finishes.
We could never imagine that coming here,
in just our ninth WRC rally, that we would be celebrating a 1-2 result.
We wanted to use this year as a learning year and we won't let this result carry us away. Our Hyundai i20 WRC is improving all the time.
