Before the initial announcement of the high-performance N lineup in September 2015, Hyundai Motors embarked on a project in 2012 with the project code RM (Racing Midship). The RM project was initiated to go beyond limits and create new high performance technology for future N models. Upon reaching the advanced research stage, vehicles underwent road tests to validate newly developed technologies, observe their effects on performance, and improve them for later application in N production models. Additionally, the MR (a midship engine and rear-drive system) was utilized to
enable advanced research into vehicle movement with different weight distributions between the front and rear, to better understand the effects of a weighed-down, high-strength body frame on the vehicle's performance; essential testing for a high-performance car. This research resulted in a midship design with the engine mounted in the middle of the car instead of the front. RM is the tech-bridge between motorsports and high-performance N vehicles that takes on the challenge of systematically developing high-performance technologies.
The result of this project was that the RM series models were not just one-off displays of exterior design, but instead have become true concept cars, demonstrating the evolution of high-performance technologies that will trickle down to N models. They are displayed at various motor shows every year to communicate the results of N research and development to customers.
With the main objective of the RM project being to develop core technologies for use in high-performance vehicles, the RM series actually used the design of existing models to enable performance tests without having to camouflage the car. The exterior design was changed continuously to incorporate more high-performance technology. The result was a bold change to the look of the front end with optimal aerodynamic styling.

The RM16 features a slew of new technologies currently under testing to improve driving performance and further enable the driver to feel at one with the car, an emotion that all N models aim to capture. One of these technologies is the electronic supercharger, that increases the drive performance of the RM16's high-output engine by 14% from 60 to 100 km/h and by 17% from 80 to 120 km/h, when compared to the RM15.
The RM 16 also incorporates our new N Corner Carving Differential (NCCD), an electronic limited slip differential
developed in-house that allows driven wheels to turn at different speeds for a unique carving feel when cornering. NCCD trickles down into the i30 N and other N production models.
Along with active rear spoiler technology to automatically optimize aerodynamics, these technological innovations enable incredible performance and translate into pure driving bliss when tearing down a straightaway, aggressively taking corners, or hitting the brakes hard.

Another area that is being closely looked at is how to enhance the emotional connection between car and driver, for a feeling of total immersion while driving. To that end, the electronically-variable exhaust system, that gives off an intense exhaust sound to match the feeling of acceleration, and sport seats with variable bolsters that ensure a perfect fit for the driver, are two of the main technologies being tested in the RM16; features that will also find their way into the i30 N.
The RM14, which was unveiled at the Busan Motor Show in 2014, was the first car to result from this project; a high-performance sports car with a midship engine structure focused on the dynamic performance of its 2.0 liter, 300 horsepower, Theta T-GDI engine, with a sub-frame constructed
as a single piece to give high-tensile strength to the body frame. With these features, the RM14 successfully demonstrated its successful first-stage development as a high-performance vehicle.
The RM15 on display at the 2015 Seoul Motor Show arrived with an aluminum frame and external panels made of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) to both reduce body weight and further increase panel strength. The focus of this development was to ensure stability at high speeds, and drastically increase cooling capacity in extreme driving conditions by creating downforce and heat flow control, key elements to the aerodynamics of such a high-performance vehicle. As such, the Racing Midship 2016, or RM16, made its debut at the 2016 Busan Motor Show, based on the high-performance technologies that resulted from the development of the RM14 and RM15.
